Dogecoin – The renowned meme coin which turned eight years old yesterday, has reached the annual list of the most mispronounced phrases on broadcast compiled by the US Captioning Company.
Newscasters also had difficulty pronouncing Dogecoin (DOGE), Ethereum (ETH), the name of the second-largest blockchain, “cheugy,” a derogatory neologism that mocks millennial-starting fads, and “Dalgona,” the name of the South Korean confection popularised by Netflix’s hit dystopian series “Squid Games.”
Surprisingly, after being in the spotlight for years, adolescent sensation Billie Eilish’s surname is still mispronounced on TV. The pop singer soared to stardom when her massive single “Bad Guy” topped the charts all over the world in 2019. In 2020, her breakthrough studio album, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
People frequently mispronounce the surnames of Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas and footballer Jason Kelce.
Last year’s roster included immunologist Anthony Fauci and Vice President Kamala Harris.
